The University of Arizona College of Medicine – South Campus Internal Medicine Residency Program is located in beautiful Tucson, AZ. We are an ACGME-accredited program based out of the Banner University Medical Center – South Campus, which provides compassionate, cost-effective and evidence-based medical care to our patients.
Diversity of clinical exposures is the core of our program. We provide residents a unique experience in the care of urban, rural and underserved populations. Residents are provided ample learning opportunities and individualized attention from our renowned physicians and clinical staff in part due to our low faculty to resident ratio. The small size of our program and closeness of our residents is what attracts many residency candidates.
Starting in 2008, we began our physician training program with 10 residents. We now have 30 residents, 10 per program year (PGY1-3) class. We also have two Neurology Interns rotating with our PGY1 class. We currently have a 92 percent ABIM Board Passage rate through 2012-14.
Some of our recent accomplishments include sending six residents to the American College of Physicians (ACP) National competition. Our Doctor’s Dilemma team placed first in the Arizona Chapter competition. Two residents also took first place at state, one in the Oral Clinical Vignette and one for Research Poster. Another resident’s abstract was chosen as one of the top 20 Abstracts in the nation. All competed at the ACP National Competition in May 2016, with one a winner in the Medical Research Abstract Competition.
Our fellowship placement rate is high as well. Every PGY3 who applied for a fellowship this year got their top pick, with two accepting a pre-match position.
