About the Lecture:
A highly-sought after international speaker, Dr. Sairam 'Sai' Parthasarathy returns to the Living Healthy With Arthritis lecture series to present one of the most important topics in medicine today.  Dr. Parthasarathy led the 2015 Living Healthy With Arthritis (LHWA) Conference and returns to deliver the latest research on 'The Healing Power of Sleep ... Chief Nourisher of the Body, Mind and Heart.'  One of the LHWA series' most popular speakers, Dr. Parthasarathy will share the newest information on the nature and importance of sleep and its role in disease prevention and population health. He will address the epidemic of sleep deprivation, insomnia, and sleep apnea and its relationship to pain, arthritis, our immune system, obesity, Alzheimer’s and heart disease. He will discuss sleep disorders and the economic burden on the healthcare systems of the U.S. and the world.

Sleep disorders are among the most common clinical problems encountered in modern medicine. Strong evidence shows that insufficient sleep has a significant impact on numerous health conditions, including chronic disease development, incidence and immunologic function. The latest research shows the relationship between arthritis and sleep to be one of great impact.  Dr. Parthasarathy will share the evidence that shows lack of sleep as a trigger to the inflammatory pathways that can exacerbate arthritis pain, and the evidence that poor sleep can make individuals more sensitive to the feeling of pain. He will highlight novel research into the connections between pain and sleep, a connection that is both complex and reciprocal.  Additionally, he will share information on the increasing evidence that sleep deprivation may in fact be a driver for the development or progression of inflammatory joint diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, as well.
