Doc Talks: Throat Cancer – The New Epidemic

Tue, 09/11/2018 - 5:00pm

Co-sponsored by the College of Medicine – Tucson and Banner Health, Doc Talks is a free lecture series for the Tucson community.

On Tuesday, Sept. 11, Julie E. Bauman, MD, MPH, will present the second of four free lectures as part of the Doc Talks series. Dr. Bauman is a tenured professor of medicine, chief of hematology/oncology and associate director of translational research at the University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC). Dr. Bauman is an internationally recognized expert in head and neck cancer (HNC), which affects the lining of the mouth, throat and voice box. Dr. Bauman is funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the V Foundation to conduct clinical trials evaluating nutraceuticals, targeted therapy and immunotherapy to prevent or treat HNC. She sees patients with HNC and thyroid cancer at the UACC clinic at Banner – University Medical Center North.

Dr. Bauman's lecture, "Throat Cancer: The New Epidemic," will focus on the risk factors for throat cancer, including environmental and viral carcinogens. Men are on the front lines of a new cancer epidemic across Arizona, the United States, and North America. She will address the stereotypes and stigma associated with a new diagnosis of throat cancer, and emphasize available prevention strategies for this highly preventable malignancy.

The lecture will commence at 6 p.m., but guests are encouraged to arrive early for a Wellness Expo featuring free skin UV damage analyses, osteoporosis tests and more.

REGISTRATION: Light refreshments will be provided at all “Doc Talks,” but attendees are required to register in advance by calling 800-230-CARE (2273) or registering online at BannerHealth.com/DocTalks.
