FACULTY CANDIDATE PRESENTATION

TOPIC: "Promoting Cervical Cancer Screening among Minority and Underserved Women"
SPEAKER: Adebola Adeboyega, PhD, RN

March 16, 2018 | 11:30 a.m.
UA College of Nursing, Room 470

Dr. Adebola Adegboyega received both a BSN and PhD in Nursing from the University of Kentucky. She is currently a post-doctoral scholar in the University of Kentucky, College of Nursing. Before becoming a nurse, she earned a degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences from the Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences, Nigeria and a post-graduate diploma in microbiology from the University of Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria.

She worked as a registered nurse in the acute care unit at Good Samaritan Hospital, University of Kentucky Healthcare, Lexington, KY where she provided care for adult patients with non-critical ailments and a wide variety of illness.

Dr. Adegboyega’s dissertation examined determinants of cervical cancer screening among African immigrants in Central Kentucky. This work has been published in peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Transcultural Nursing. Continuing her research interest in health disparities experienced by vulnerable populations, she is currently involved in various projects which promote breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer prevention for rural Appalachian Kentucky populations. She has also served as a research assistant on projects designed to promote heart health among African Americans and reduce diabetes risk for grandparents headed households.

Dr. Adegboyega’s career goal is to promote health and reduce health disparities experienced across the cancer continuum. She hopes to contribute to improved understanding of barriers to cancer early detection among minority and underserved populations, such as immigrants, and ethnic/racial minorities, through community participatory research. She is actively involved in improving the health of vulnerable and underserved populations through research and community service.

In her presentation, Dr. Adegboyega will be discussing cervical cancer as a public health problem globally. The risk of invasive cervical cancer remains high among minority and underserved women including immigrant women. Early detection through Pap screening is crucial for prevention, treatment and prognosis. Given the unequitable burden of cervical cancer experienced by minority and underserved population, there is need to understand strategies to promote cervical cancer screening among this group. Discussion will focus on men’s role in Pap screening promotion and predictors of Pap screening among a group of minority women.
