DOM Faculty Spotlighted in UA College of Medicine Teaching Awards Ceremony

Several Department of Medicine faculty members were among recipients of awards during the 36th Annual UA College of Medicine – Tucson Faculty Teaching Awards and Vernon and Virginia Furrow Awards ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 19, in DuVal Auditorium.

These included:
Faculty Teaching AwardsJohn Bloom, MD (3 awards), associate professor with dual appointments in the departments of Pharmacology and Medicine, and a research associate in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine; Amy Sussman, MD, assistant professor of medicine and Division of Nephrology Fellowship Program director; and Tirdad Zangeneh, DO, assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases, director for the Arizona AIDS Education and Training Center and director of the third-year Medicine Clerkship.

AMES Grants for Medical Education ResearchLu Martinez, PhD, assistant professor of medicine and director, Educational Research and Development, Department of Medicine (PI); co-investigators, Ken Knox, MD; Kevin Moynahan, MD; Conrad Clemens, MD; Karen Spear Ellinwood, PhD, JD; Gail Pritchard, PhD; Bryna Koch, MPH

This grant from the Academy of Medical Education Scholars (AMES) allows Dr. Martinez and her team to examine the consequences of physician training programmatic changes, medical students career development needs, patterns of practice, and GME program funding and redesign needs. Such evidence is critical for strategically improving physician training programs and, by extension, the clinical workforce in our state.  The study is expected to provide data-driven results to allow academic medical centers, similar to our institution, and the state to arrive at informed educational policies and training designs that best shape the clinical workforce, align with executive strategic plans, financing and infrastructure, and highlight the value of GME programs.
