Dr. Vasudha Goel Joins UA Department of Anesthesiology Chronic Pain Management Team
Vasudha Goel, MD, has joined the Department of Anesthesiology as a member of the chronic pain management team. She will serve an assistant professor in the department and will see patients as a Banner Health physician. The UA chronic pain management team specializes in interventional pain management: epidural steroid injections, facet and major joint injections, peripheral nerve blocks, chronic back and neck pain, headache, arthritis, complex pain syndromes, and spinal cord stimulator trials. Drs. Vivian Y. Shi, Drew Kurtzman join UA Division of Dermatology
Vivian Y. Shi, MD, and Drew Kurtzman, MD, have joined the UA Division of Dermatology at the UA Department of Medicine as assistant professors and will practice medicine at the Banner – University Medical Center Tucson and UA Cancer Center – North and Orange Grove Campus outpatient clinics. Dr. Kurtzman, a UA and UA College of Medicine – Tucson alum, was recruited from Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School, where he completed a fellowship in dermatology and rheumatology. He also was an attending physician and staff dermatologist at the VA Boston Healthcare System. Research interests include skin cancer, metastatic melanoma and gastrointestinal stromal tumors. Dr. Kurtzman has multiple peer-reviewed publications, scientific abstracts and oral and poster presentations to his credit.
A native of Guangzhou, China, Dr. Shi comes to the UA from the University of California – Davis, where she was chief resident in the Dermatology Residency Program at UC Davis Medical Center. Before that, she completed an internship in internal medicine at University of Chicago/NorthShore University Health Systems. She earned her medical degree from the University of Chicago, where she also completed a Medical Student Research Fellowship with the American Dermatological Association. She earned her undergraduate degree in physiological sciences from UCLA. Dr. Shi has multiple published research papers and abstracts accepted for presentation.
UA Nephrologist Co-Authors Book on Diabetes and Kidney Disease
UA nephrologist Bijin Thajudeen, MD, is the co-author of Managing Diabetic Nephropathies in Clinical Practice, which was released by Adis, a medical publishing unit of Springer Nature.
The book offers an overview of the diagnosis, treatment and long-term management of diabetic-related kidney disease. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects about 10 percent of the global population with millions dying due to lack of access to affordable treatment. Dr. Thajudeen, a UA assistant professor at the UA Division of Nephrology, completed his fellowship at the UA in 2013, and wrote the chapter titled, "Introduction and disease overview." He currently is medical director of DCI dialysis centers in Tucson and Douglas, Ariz.
2016 Radiology Awards Honor Drs. Taljanovic and Gimber
Mihra Taljanovic, MD, PhD, FACR, and Lana Gimber, MD, MPH, faculty members at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson, were recognized with the 2016 prestigious Radiological Society of North America (RSNA®) Honored Educator Award. This achievement recognizes an individual’s dedication to furthering the profession of radiology and commitment to radiology education by delivering high-quality educational content for RSNA endeavors.
Dr. Taljanovic is director of musculoskeletal imaging research – development and professor of medical imaging and orthopaedic surgery; Dr. Gimber is assistant professor of musculoskeletal radiology.
‘SMART’ Use of Radiotherapy in Breast Cancer Focus of ‘Better Than Ever’ Grant
Victor J. Gonzalez, MD, an assistant professor of radiation oncology, has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the UA Cancer Center’s Better Than Ever (BTE) Program. His research team will use the award to investigate a new technique called Surface Mapped Radiotherapy (SMART), for a patient-specific approach to breast cancer treatment. The research will serve as the foundation for a multi-institutional trial to assess the impact of this technique on patient quality of life. The BTE training program is a fitness training and fundraising program designed to help make walking, running or biking a regular part life. The program raises funds to support investigator-initiated clinical trials focusing on breast and gynecologic cancers under the umbrella of Women’s Cancers at the University of Arizona Cancer Center.
