South Campus Resident Dr. Jessica August Picked as ACP Resident/Fellow of the Year

The American College of Physicians (ACP) has named as its Arizona Chapter Resident/Fellow of the Year our very own Jessica August, MD, a third-year resident physician in training in the University of Arizona College of Medicine South Campus Internal Medicine Residency Program at Banner – University Medical Center South.

She’s been invited to speak as a guest preceding the ACP Arizona Chapter Scientific Meeting (Nov. 4-6 in the Memorial Union at Arizona State University) during the Governor’s Dinner, Friday, Nov. 4, in the Heritage Room at ASU’s University Club, 425 E. University Drive, Tempe.

Dr. August actually is among two residents chosen for the honor this year, the other being a Mayo Clinic Scottsdale resident Katie Murphy, MBBCh.

“They both had marvelous letters of recommendation, so the committee decided to have a shared award,” said Dixie S. Swan, executive director, ACP Arizona Chapter. “Each awardee will have a chance to say a few words of thanks during a dinner Friday night. And then we’ll introduce the awardees on Sunday during the award and concluding ceremonies.”

The award caught Dr. August by surprise. “I am completely humbled by such an honor. It reflects the amazing support I get from my colleagues, advisors, and faculty who I'm forever grateful for,” she said.

Eugene Trowers, MD, MPH, director of the South Campus Internal Medicine Residency Program, sang her praises.

“Dr. August is one of the most capable leaders among her peers as well as an unselfish team player.  Her strong performance in academic activities is anchored by her excellent communication skills.  Jessica is truly a motivator for students, house staff and faculty alike,” he said.

“Her winning of this prestigious regional award is a tremendous accolade for her personally as well as for her faculty, staff and peers,” added Dr. Trowers, also a professor of medicine and director of Banner – UMC South Gastrointestinal Services.

At last year’s ACP Arizona Chapter Scientific Meeting—hosted at the DoubleTree Hotel in Tucson—UA Internal Medicine residents swept all the major awards. For the full schedule of events at the 2016 meeting, click here or download this PDF of the program.
