UA Arthritis Center Faculty Headline ‘Spotlight on Arthritis’ Week at Canyon Ranch

UA Arthritis Center faculty present at world-renowned Canyon Ranch Health Resort 

Member of the University of Arizona Arthritis Center were the invited presenters for Canyon Ranch Health Resort's “Spotlight on Arthritis” week, held Oct. 10-14 at their world-renowned Tucson flagship resort. UA Arthritis Center faculty members (from left) C. Kent Kwoh, MD, Eric P. Gall, MD, and orthopedic surgeon L. Daniel Latt, MD, PhD, were the featured presenters.

UA Arthritis Center Director and Division of Rheumatology Chief Dr. Kwoh presented “Osteoarthritis Under the Microscope” and “Arthritis Interrupted: The Latest Research.” Dr. Gall, rheumatologist, center co-founder and former director, presented on “Keeping Joint Pain at Bay” and “Defining, Diagnosing and Treating Arthritis.” Dr. Latt, a foot and ankle specialist, presented on “Solving Problems of the Foot and Ankle.”

The UA Arthritis Center and Canyon Ranch Health Resort have enjoyed a long and beneficial relationship, dating back to the mid-1980s. Canyon Ranch founder Mel Zuckerman is a previous member of the UAAC Advisory Board and was instrumental in the creation of the Living Healthy With Arthritis (LHWA) Community Outreach and Education Program as well as the UA Mel & Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health.

UA Arthritis Center Researchers Published in 'Arthritis Care and Research' 

The UA Arthritis Center's Ernest R. Vina, MD (at left); C. Kent Kwoh, MD; Erin Ashbeck, MPH, and Di Ran were published in this month's editions of the journal Arthritis Care and Research—a publication of the American College of Rheumatology.

Their abstract is titled: “Relationship Between Knee Pain and Patient Preferences for Joint Replacement: Health Care Access Matters” (click to view)

They concluded that, “Among participants without health insurance, severe knee pain was paradoxically associated with less willingness to undergo TKR (total knee replacement). Policies that improve access to quality healthcare may affect patient preferences and increase utilization of TKR surgery among vulnerable populations.”

UA Arthritis Center Director C. Kent Kwoh, MD, will presented an invited talk om September in Xi'an, China.

An internationally-recognized expert in osteoarthritis, Dr. Kwoh's talk was titled “Pain and Osteoarthritis.” This talk was delivered at the 2016 International Combined Orthopaedic Research Society (ICORS) Meeting, held in Xi'an, Shanxi Province, People’s Republic of China, Sept. 21-25.
