The University of Arizona/Banner – UMC Team took second place in corporate team fundraising Sunday at the 2016 Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes at the Rillito Park Race Track at North First Street and River Road.

The event, sponsored by the American Diabetes Association, got under way at 8 a.m. and the walk started at 9 a.m. Everyone was finished by 11 a.m.

Pictured right at the walk are: The Arizona Nutrition Network’s Kinsey Torbet, Banner nurse practitioner Jeanne Fenn, UA Adult Diabetes Program Medical Director Merri Pendergrass, MD, and DPEC program coordinator Rosi Vogel

They raised $545 to HealthSouth Tucson’s $890 and were followed by Walgreen’s Tucson East at $265.

A total of $21,821.40 was raised by the 48 teams and 308 individual walkers who participated.

“Our team was Banner UofA1C,” said Rosi Vogel, program coordinator for the Diabetes Prevention and Education Center, which is housed in the Abrams Public Health Center adjacent to Banner – University Medical Center South.

“We had 24 registered walkers and many more joined the day of the Walk. I was more than pleased to see some of the DPEC class participants come to walk!”

She said you can still add to their total by going to this link and clicking on the “DONATE” button. Their goal is $1,000.

“It was a beautiful, crisp and sunny day. They had a DJ and a live band playing some Halloween themed music. There were walkers of all ages and many dogs, too!” Vogel (pictured right) added. “It was great to be able to support the community and the ADA, as we are also committed to offer free diabetes and wellness education.”

DPEC and the Diabetes clinic at Banner – UMC South are both affiliated with the UA Division of Endocrinology as well as the UA Center for Disparities in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism. You can view a quarterly schedule of health and wellness workshops (in English and Spanish) here.
