Open House and Presentation on Cancer Clinical Trials, July 28

The University of Arizona Cancer Center and Banner – UMC will host an open house and public lecture on clinical trials from 5 - 7 p.m. Thursday, July 28, at the UA Cancer Center / North, 3838 N. Campbell Ave.

Daruka Mahadevan, MD, PhD, director of Phase I clinical trials and co-director of Experimental Therapeutics at the University of Arizona Cancer Center, will discuss clinical trials, which are research studies that involve people. A cancer clinical trial is designed to show how a particular anticancer strategy attacks the cancer, affects people who receive it, and improves survival rates.  New treatments must be proven safe and effective with a certain number of patients before they can be made widely available. Many treatments used today are the result of past clinical trials.

The University of Arizona Cancer Center, the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in Southern Arizona, participates in more than 200 clinical trials. For a complete list, see http://uacc.arizona.edu/research/clinical-trials.

Dr. Mahadevan, a UA professor of medicine, is a highly experienced physician-scientist in hematology and oncology. He specializes in the treatment of patients with pancreatic cancer, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, myelodysplastic syndromes and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, including chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

No reservations are necessary to attend the open house and presentation. Light refreshments and entertainment provided. Questions: margaret.eller@bannerhealth.com.
