“Kevin Moynahan, MD, Named 2018 Alumni of the Year”

Dr. Kevin MoynahanKevin Moynahan, MD, UA College of Medicine – Tucson deputy dean for education and a professor of medicine in the Division of Geriatrics, General Internal Medicine and Palliative Medicine, has been named the college’s Alumni of the Year. The honor is bestowed annually by the University of Arizona Alumni Association.

Alumni of the Year emblemIn a nomination letter to the association, former college dean Steve Goldschmid, MD, currently interim chief, UA Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, wrote, “Since joining our faculty, Dr. Moynahan has worked tirelessly to support and promote excellence in medical education for our students. He is also one of the best internists in the state and is sought after by all who know him, wanting him to be their primary care provider.”

“College of Medicine – Tucson Physiology Graduate Wins Excellence in Research Award”

Justin FrereJustin John Frere’s innovative student research at the College of Medicine – Tucson has earned him an Excellence in Undergraduate Research Award. Recognizing outstanding achievement in independent undergraduate research, the UA College of Science selected Frere, a 2018 graduate in physiology and molecular and cellular biology, as the award winner out of 7,000 students. 

Frere did all his UA research work on the immune system at the College of Medicine – Tucson under the guidance of Janko Nikolich-Zugich, MD, PhD, an immunologist, gerontologist and chair of the UA Department of Immunobiology.

“Justin epitomizes what I consider a model young researcher: enthusiastic, bright, hard-working and curious. He also has an exceptional drive to improve people’s lives,” said Dr. Nikolich-Zugich, who also is co-director of the UA Center on Aging with Mindy Fain, MD, chief of the UA Division of Geriatrics, General Internal Medicine and Palliative Medicine.

Drs. Amy Sussman, Kevin Moynahan and Charles Cairns at Senior Awards Brunch“Dr. Sussman among Honorees at COM-T Class of 2018 Senior Awards Brunch”

UA Department of Medicine Associate Chair for Education Amy Sussman, MD, was presented with the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson Annual Senior Awards Brunch, which was held May 10 at the Marriott University Park Grand Ballroom.

Dr. Sussman, who is also an associate professor of medicine in the UA Division of Nephrology and director of the Nephrology Fellowship Program and DOM Clerkship Program for third- and fourth-year medical students, was chosen by the COM-T Class of 2018 for the award. Class of 2018 Senior Awards Brunch winners at UA College of Medicine - Tucson

"It was a true honor to receive this award from such an outstanding class," Dr. Sussman said.

“Physiology Undergrads Receive UA's Pillars of Excellence Award”
April 20, 2018

Two students in the College of Medicine - Tucson's undergraduate physiology program have recieved the University of Arizona's Pillars of Excellence Award for Outstanding Honors student. Only 10 students from across campus are awarded this honor every year in recognition of their outstanding accomplishments. They are:

  • Maya Lowney and Christie RosputniMaya Lowney – Originally from Hawaii, Lowney is a senior majoring in physiology and minoring in dance and health and human values who currently interns with Elder Rehab at the Jewish Community Center (with an eye toward mental and rehabilitative aspects of dance as therapy), and
  • Christie Rosputni – A senior from Tucson, Rosputni is majoring in Physiology and works as a certified medical assistant and operations manager at SPARCC Sports Medicine with plans to become a pediatrician.
