Dr. Bime Chosen for National ATS Committee on Health Equality and Diversity

Dr. Christian BimeChristian Bimé, MD, a UA assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine and medical director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Banner – University Medical Center – Tucson, was asked by the president-elect of the American Thoracic Society to serve on the ATS Health Equality and Diversity Committee.

In addition, he will serve on the ATS International Health Committee. 

ATS logo & themeIn accepting the appointments, Dr. Bime replied, “It is an honor to be invited and I am delighted to contribute positively towards these noble goals.”

The designation, said Sairam Parthasarathy, MD, interim pulmonary division chief and director, UA Health Sciences Center for Sleep and Circadian Sciences as well as the Banner – UMC Center for Sleep Disorders, is an honor for Dr. Bime, the division, department and UA College of Medicine – Tucson.

Dr. Bime will serve on the committee from May 2018 to May 2019. He was approached by Polly E. Parsons, MD, a pulmonary and critical care physician like Dr. Bime, incoming ATS president and chair, Department of Medicine, University of Vermont College of Medicine.

“Participation on ATS committees represents one of the most important benefits of membership that provides opportunities for members to chart the future course of our Society. Our committee members serve as thought-leaders for the Society, and direct our many efforts to improve research, training, and health care delivery,” Dr. Parsons said.

Dr. Bime earned his medical degree from the Universite de Yaunde in Cameroon and, afterward, a master’s degree in epidemiology from Michigan State University. He did his residency training in internal medicine at Detroit’s Wayne State University School of Medicine, where he was also chief resident. He completed his advanced fellowship training in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Johns Hopkins University. He joined the UA College of Medicine – Tucson faculty in 2013.

  • 2014 – Career Development Award, University of Arizona Health Sciences
  • 2014 – Arizona Biomedical Research Commission Early Stage Investigator Grant
  • 2013-14 – Canyon Ranch Center for Prevention and Health Promotion P/F Study Grant
  • 2012 – NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) F32 Grant
  • 2012 – American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) 5th Fellow’s Asthma Conference Award      
  • 2012 – American Thoracic Society (ATS) Trainee Travel Award
  • 2010 – American Thoracic Society (ATS) Minority Trainee Travel Award (MTTA) 
  • 2009-13 Research Fellow, American Lung Association - Asthma Clinical Research Centers Network (ALA-ACRC) Data coordinating Center
  • 2009-10 – Research Fellow under NIH Multidisciplinary T32 Training Program in Lung Diseases
