Care for patients suffering from liver disorders and related diseases is provided by physicians within the Liver Research Institute and Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology through the facilities of our primary clinical partners, Banner – University Medical Center Tucson and South campuses, the University of Arizona Cancer Center – North Campus and the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System in Tucson.
We sponsor Arizona-based health outreach programs, such as screenings for hepatitis C.
Our providers offer state-of-the-art treatments for patients with all forms of liver disease. By participating in clinical trials of new therapies, the institute is able to provide many patients with early access to potentially life-saving treatments before they are available to the general public. Clinical trials are performed in collaboration with the pharmaceutical/device industry as well as the National Institutes of Health.
Hepatitis C Screening Clinics
Several types of hepatitis — viral inflammation of the liver that can cause permanent damage — require clinical care by a physician or other health-care professional. About 20,000 new infections of hepatitis C occur in the United States each year, but most people with hepatitis are unaware they have contracted it. As a service to the community, the Liver Research Institute offers free hepatitis antibody screenings on Fridays from 8-10:30 a.m. at Banner – UMC Tucson’s 6th Floor Adult Medicine Physician Offices. The test is a finger stick with results back in 20 minutes. If the test is positive, patients are referred to their primary care provider for confirmatory testing, which involves an HCV quantitative test and would have an associated cost. For additional information, call our hotline (520) 621-HEPC (4372).
Liver Transplant Services
Over the past 20 years, our liver transplant specialists, working collaboratively with the UA Department of Surgery, have performed more than a dozen liver transplants a year on average for patients suffering from liver failure, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). We offer complete liver transplant and pre- and post-transplant management services. The actual procedure is coordinated through the Department of Surgery's Abdominal Transplant team.
Imaging specialists at the University of Arizona working in conjunction with our gastroenterologists help us diagnose a variety of liver disorders, using a broad variety of techniques such as ultrasound, nuclear-based imaging, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans.
