About the Speaker
With an academic professional appointment, Ms. de Zapien has been involved in community based public health interventions and research in Arizona and throughout the Southwest and Mexico for more than 25 years. As co-investigator of numerous initiatives that are focusing on underserved populations in the southwest and northern Mexico, Ms. de Zapien partners across the university to work directly with communities to develop strategies for prevention interventions and the elimination of health disparities. She is particularly proud of her collaborative work with the promotora movement throughout the border region, her long-term commitment to community based participatory research and action, and her binational collaborations. Ms. de Zapien has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognition for her work throughout the Southwest and Mexico. Among other awards, she was the first recipient of the University of Arizona’s prestigious Koffler award recognizing outstanding community outreach and service. Most recently, she is serving as principal investigator of the Rural Health Professions Program, which supports five week-long service learning courses, practicums and internships with underserved communities in Arizona, as Principal Investigator of a binational research grant focusing on training migrant farmworkers in Mexico as community health workers and Principal Investigator to support the activities of the Arizona Community Health Worker Workforce Coalition in Arizona.

About the BLAISER Program
The Border Latino and American Indian Summer Exposure to Research (BLAISER) Program is strongly committed to attract students that represent the diverse population to biomedical research, expose them and make them sensitive to the Health Disparities in Southern of Arizona and the border region. This cutting-edge 10-week, undergraduate research experience provides an extraordinary laboratory training opportunity, pairing junior and senior level student-scholars with preeminent UA Health Sciences researchers. This is a premier research experience for undergraduate students from underrepresented backgrounds arming them with skills to make them competitive and successful in their pursuit of post-secondary education and research.

This program is held in the summer to allow students the opportunity to immerse themselves on campus at the University of Arizona Health Sciences — the next program runs June 4 to August 7, 2018. The inaugural class consisted of fifteen students in 2015. In 2017, 20 students participated. A maximum of 25 students will be accepted annually.
