Dr. Kwan Lee Picked to Head State Chapter of American College of Cardiology

Dr. Kwan LeeUniversity of Arizona cardiologist Kwan S. Lee, MD, was elected president of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) Arizona State Chapter president.

ACC AZ Chapter logoHis term as president will begin April 2019 and run through March 2022. Until then, he’ll serve as president-elect under Christian Breburda, MD, PhD, the current president who is a clinical professor of medicine with the UA College of Medicine  Phoenix and director of noninvasive cardiology and imaging at the Maricopa Integrated Health System’s Maricopa Medical Center.

As president, Dr. Breburda also serves as a governor representing Arizona on the national ACC Board of Governors. Dr. Lee also will take over that role when he ascends to the presidency.

Dr. Lee is a professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiology at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson. Cardiology is one of 14 divisions within the UA Department of Medicine, the largest department at the college with more than 200 faculty physicians, 130 resident physicians training in internal medicine and 70 fellows in advanced training in all its subspecialties.

He is also a member of the UA Sarver Heart Center, associate program director of the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship Program and director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and Cardiology Clinic at Banner – University Medical Center South.

Dr. Lee joined the UA faculty in 2009. Originally from Malaysia, he earned his medical degree from Trinity College and completed an internship at St. James’s Hospital, both in Dublin, Ireland. Afterward, he completed is internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship at May Clinic, Scottsdale, Ariz, where he received the Hassan Loutfi Distinguished Fellow Award in 2008. He also did an interventional cardiology fellowship at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.

At Banner – UMC South, he is also chair of the Credentialing Committee, serves as a member of the Resuscitation Committee and Peer-Review Committee, and is an Acute MI Core Measures Champion for the hospital campus. Dr. Lee has pursued several areas of research, including work in echocardiography, evaluating the effect of echocardiographic contrast on speckle tracking and the utilization of speckle tracking to study left atrial function. In addition, he serves as a peer-reviewer for the American Journal of Cardiology.
