Dr. Mentz completed internal medicine training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and cardiology fellowship at Duke University Hospital and the Duke Clinical Research Institute with advanced training in heart failure and clinical research methods. He received formal training in clinical pharmacology as part of the DCRI’s Clinical Pharmacology training program.
Dr. Mentz spends his clinical time at Duke University Hospital assisting with the care of heart failure, cardiac transplant and ventricular assist device patients.
He is an NIH- and industry-funded clinical trialist involved in ongoing trials designed to inform the care of cardiac patients. He is the clinical lead for the international EXSCEL trial (exenatide in diabetic patients with cardiovascular disease) and the HEART-FID trial (ferric carboxymaltose for iron deficiency in heart failure). He is lead investigator on the NHLBI-funded TRANSFORM-HF trial – a pragmatic trial of diuretic strategies in HF. He is involved with the NHLBI's Heart Failure Research Network as a site Principal Investigator.
Dr. Mentz is an active member of the Heart Failure Society of America’s Advocacy Committee and the American Heart Association’s Heart Failure Committee. He served as the first continuing medical education editor for JACC: Heart Failure and currently serves as a reviewer for many cardiovascular and HF-specific journals.
He was recently named a “Rising Star” by the American College of Cardiology (ACC). He participated in the Duke 2015 LEADER program as well as the ACC Emerging Faculty Program designed to develop the next generation of medical leaders. He is an established mentor for medical study, residents and cardiology fellows and received the 2016 Robert M. Califf Mentorship award at the DCRI.
