Applicants being accepted to new COM-T, Eller Advanced Healthcare Leadership Academy

The two colleges have worked together to re-envision COM-T’s Learning to Lead program and are excited to introduce the inaugural year of the COM-T and Eller Advanced Healthcare Leadership Academy, according to an April 16 message from Allie Min, MD, COM-T’s associate dean for career development, and Conrad Clemens, MD, MPH, COM-T senior associate dean for Graduate Medical Education.

Applications are now being accepted for this leadership development program. This nine-month program will begin in September 2024.

The program is designed to provide participants with the knowledge, skills, support, networking and self-reflection needed to effectively lead a division, section, center, clinic, or lab. Eller Executive Education has developed 12 modules as part of their Mini-MBA in Healthcare program that will be used in our program. While the content may lean toward healthcare professionals, the leadership principles are applicable to both our COM-T clinical and basic science faculty. In addition, our supplemental assignments and group discussions will be inclusive of the broad scope and interests of our faculty. Topics include:

  • Drive Performance Through High-Impact Business Strategy
  • Financial Management for Better Healthcare
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Practice
  • Change the Game: The Science of Influence
  • Design Thinking: From Starting Blocks to the Finish Line

The program is delivered in a hybrid model.

  • Asynchronous modules to deliver high-quality content in an interactive format will be completed at a pace of one module every 3 weeks. The estimated time per module is 4 hours.
  • In-person sessions are scheduled every 6 weeks (except for a shorter interval between the April and May sessions) to discuss and share applications of the concepts presented in the modules as well as build networks and relationships with faculty and co-participants

Participants who complete the program will earn the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson and Eller Executive Education Advanced Healthcare Leadership Academy Certificate.

Sessions will be held on the following Wednesdays from (8-11 a.m. or 2-5 p.m.):

  • Sept. 18 | Kickoff event
  • Oct. 30
  • Dec. 11  
  • Jan. 22  
  • March 5
  • April 16
  • May 7 | Final session and graduation

The program will be limited to a small group in order to maximize group interaction.

All COM-T faculty who meet the following eligibility criteria are invited to apply:

  • Rank of Associate or Full Professor
  • Must have a current leadership role with direct reports in a unit, team, lab, etc.
  • Participation in some leadership development course in the past is preferred

Participants will need the support of their department head and immediate supervisor, including assurance of release time on the dates noted above, and will need to make a commitment to attend all sessions and participate actively in the program.

Materials required for application:

  • Personal statement and reflections of your experience as a leader, strengths, opportunities for improvement, and goals for participating in this program (3 page maximum)
  • CV (limited to 5 pages)
  • Letter of support and commitment to release time from department head

Complete applications must be submitted by Friday, May 17.

Applications will be reviewed and participants notified of acceptance into the program by May 31.

‘Learning to Lead’ in the DOM

Multiple faculty members from the Department of Medicine participated in the predecessor program to the new Advanced Healthcare Leadership Academy, which was known as Learning to Lead and included biannual cohorts from 2010 to 2022.
