Summer 2024 professional development opportunity for UArizona faculty

[Illustration of how the Multi-Institutional Transformation and Graduate Student Support Initiative (MITSI) works to build bridges and transform institutions to support graduate STEM education for indigenous and Latinx students.]Northern Arizona University is looking for more faculty applicants who work with doctoral STEM students in the Western or Rocky Mountain regions to participate in its 2024 Regional STEM Faculty Academy: An Equity-Oriented Anti-Racist Community of Practice at NAU.

That includes University of Arizona Health Sciences faculty, according to Michael D. L. Johnson, PhD, associate dean for basic science research and graduate studies at the UArizona College of Medicine – Tucson, in a message on the opportunity sent May 8.

They already have UArizona faculty going and would like more representation!” wrote Dr. Johnson, who also is a Department of Immunobiology associate professor and the Inaugural Keating Family Endowed Professorship for Interdisciplinary Research and director of the Postdoctoral Fellowship Program at the UArizona BIO5 Institute. In addition, he’s director of the Graduate Studies for Applied Biosciences Industrial Microbial Biotechnology Track in the UArizona Applied Biosciences Graduate Interdisciplinary Program and director of the National Summer Undergraduate Research Project (NSURP).

Please note that this NAU program requires your full-time participation from July 28 through August 2, 2024, in Flagstaff, Arizona. On campus accommodations and meals will be provided, but participants are responsible for their own travel to and from Flagstaff.

Benefits Include: Build relationships with colleagues who have a shared commitment to anti-racist world view development and equity-oriented practice. Develop capacity to recruit, retain, and support STEM PhD students from historically excluded communities, with a focus on Indigenous and Latinx students. Participants will receive $1,000 stipend, plus five nights of housing (single occupancy) and meals on the NAU campus.
