UA Receives $1.1M for Study of Genetic Risk Factors for Type 2 Diabetes and Heart Disease Some people who take statins to lower cholesterol have a slightly higher risk of developing type-2 diabetes. UA Study Finds Link Between Sleep Loss, Nighttime Snacking, Junk Food Cravings and Obesity The study found poor sleep quality was associated with nighttime snacking and a high likelihood of craving junk food. The study also found that junk food cravings were associated with increased risk of obesity, diabetes and other health problems.

UA’s Dr. Monica Kraft Receives Distinguished Achievement Award from American Thoracic Society The award—one of ATS’ most important—is one of several honors Dr. Kraft has received in the past year. A physician-scientist renowned for her work on asthma, she served as president of the ATS in 2012-13.

Infectious Diseases Fellow Seeks Citizen Help in Kissing Bug, Chagas Disease Study

For Dr. Norm Beatty, a UA Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program member and principal investigator on a study, “Prevalence of Chagas disease among high-risk individuals in Arizona,” it’s all about kissing bugs. May through July is their most active period of the year and he’s working to enlist citizen input to collect bugs and screen people potentially infected by bites. All of Us Research Program Begins National Enrollment Effort; Nine Banner Sites in Arizona Enrolling Volunteers Events are planned across the nation to engage diverse communities in the national recruitment effort.
