From left: Academy of Medical Education Scholars take a bow; Dr. John Bloom accepts his 2nd award (from Student Government President Odi Mogor); Dean's List  - Year I&II awardees Drs. Darnell, Sussman, Bracamonte and Larsen; and Educator of the Year, Dr. Scott Klewer (with Student Government's Zack Rockov).

Drs. John Bloom and Amy Sussman were the big winners again from the Department of Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson Faculty Teaching Awards Ceremony held Nov. 3 in DuVal Auditorium.

Both were repeat winners from last year, in addition to Drs. Diana Darnell and Brandon Larsen, for the Cardiovascular, Pulmonary & Renal Systems Block of medical student education. In fact, Drs. Bloom and Sussman have been winners at the last four teaching award ceremonies, often winning in multiple categories—as was the case this year also for Dr. Bloom.

Kevin Moynahan, MD, deputy dean of education and professor in the Division of Geriatric, General Internal and Palliative Medicine, emceed festivities.

This is the 37th year the Faculty Teaching Awards and the Vernon and Virginia Furrow Awards have been presented to individual faculty, housestaff and rural health preceptors for their particularly noteworthy accomplishments as teachers.

Outstanding teaching is an integral part of the College of Medicine – Tucson's mission and is deserving of significant recognition. These awards recognize faculty members for teaching excellence and their ability to encourage intellectual excitement, inspire the discovery of knowledge, and foster critical inquiry in the classroom, lab, hospital or in the clinic.

Additionally, departments are recognized for their outstanding teaching by a clerkship or elective. Also recognized are administrative and clinical support staff who have made a valuable and appreciated impact on college life through their interactions with students, faculty and others.
