This past fall sped by so quickly it was difficult to keep track of all the fabulous events occurring across the University of Arizona Health Sciences campus.

The University of Arizona Cancer Center hosted a Cancer Immunotherapy Minisymposium on Friday, Dec. 8, that spotlighted some of the key research being done in this area at the center, UA Division of Hematology and Oncology, and related divisions from Radiation Oncology to Medical Imaging and beyond. Among the speakers: Hem-Onc division chief Julie Bauman, MD, MPH; Phase I Clinical Trials director Daruka Mahadevan, MD, PhD; BIO5 Institute director Jennifer K. Barton, PhD; Sally Dickinson, PhD, Protul Shrikant, PhD, Deepta Bhattacharya, PhD, and Dominick Schenten, PhD... (see photo above right). It was capped by a roundtable discussion. The new 3-story, $100 million outpatient health care facility Banner – University Medicine North, Building 2, hosted a number of patients, physicians and staff Monday, Dec. 11, 2017, as part of a "Preview Event" hosted by Banner Health and the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson. Building 2 is nestled between the University of Arizona Cancer Center's Peter and Paula Fasseas Cancer Clinic at 3838 N. Campbell Road and the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern Arizona, 2155 E. Allen Road. Most adult health services ambulatory clinics will be moving to the site on a staggered schedule beginning later this month, with the first opening Dec. 28. Others will complete the move largely by mid-January. Read about it in the Arizona Daily Star here. The UA Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine hosted a free public lecture on interstitial lung diseases sponsored by the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (PFF) on Friday, Dec. 8, in BIO5 Room 103. Some luminaries at the UA Sarver Heart Center and UA Division of Cardiology at the UA Department of Medicine - Tucson made great presentations on their research and careers before the real fun began -- round-robin speed dating format with individuals and groups of med students, postdocs, residents, fellows, etc., getting one-on-one time with physicians investigators, including Drs. Nancy Sweitzer, Karl Kern, Steve Goldman, Carol Gregorio, Julia Indik, Kwan Lee, Kapil Lotun, Beth Calhoun and Ankit Desai. Others joined the fun, including Drs. Frank Marcus and Joe Alpert. Peter Howarth, BSc (Hons), MBBS, DM, FRCP, a professor of allergy and respiratory medicine and honorary consultant physician with the University of Southampton Faculty of Medicine in Southampton, England, addressed faculty, fellow and resident physicians of the University of Arizona Department of Medicine on Monday, Nov. 20, 2017. His topic: “Epithelial Injury in Severe Asthma” To watch archived video from the lecture, see this link. Dr. Howarth was a special guest speaker on behalf of the DOM Office of the Chair and the Division of Genetics, Genomics and Precision Medicine. He was introduced by Eugene Bleecker, MD, chief of the inviting division and co-director of the Division of Pharmacogenomics in the UA Health Sciences Center for Applied Genetics and Genomic Medicine. Traditionally when the steel work portion of a big building is complete, the construction team holds a "topping off" ceremony for the last beam to be placed. Everyone signs the beam and dignitaries come to make speeches on the progress the building will offer the community. In the case of the HSIB and Biosciences Research Lab buildings on the UA Health Sciences campus, it's anticipated great contributions will be made toward innovative therapies and technologies to remedy some of the world's most challenging medical issues. Tech Launch Arizona hosted a research forum at the Medical Research Building on the UA Health Sciences campus Thursday, Oct. 19, noon-1 p.m., that put the spotlight on Avery Therapeutics Inc., a Tucson start-up company that holds the license on a tissue-engineered cardiac graft to treat heart failure. Dr. Steve Goldman, a professor of medicine at the UA Sarver Heart Center, is one of the company founders. Learn more here...
