Several faculty members and houseofficers from the University of Arizona Department of Medicine will split recognition for nine of the honors to be presented at noon, Thursday, Nov. 8, in DuVal Auditorium at the 39th Annual UA College of Medicine – Tucson Faculty Teaching Awards and the Vernon and Virginia Furrow Awards Ceremonies.
That amounts to about a quarter of the awards to be given out. Awardees were selected by the Academy of Medical Education Scholars at the college. Announcement letters were received recently by winning candidates whose nominations were submitted by the Sept. 14 deadline. Among them, Drs. Amy Sussman, John Bloom and Joao Paulo (J.P.) Ferreira repeated as winners from last year for at least one of their awards (see list below).

Monica Kraft, MD, department chair, professor of medicine and the Robert and Irene Flinn Endowed Chair of Medicine at the UA, encouraged all faculty and staff to attend the ceremony to cheer on their colleagues.

In addition, Erika Bracamonte, MD, a UA Department of Pathology associate professor with a dual appointment in the UA Division of Nephrology as the renal biopsy service director and who teaches Microscope Rounds and presents regularly on behalf of the Divisions of Nephrology and Rheumatology, was the winner of the Furrow Award for Basic Science Teaching in the Undergraduate Medical Curriculum. Last year, Dr. Bracamonte won the Dean’s List for Teaching Excellence – Year 2 for the Cardiovascular, Pulmonary and Renal Systems Block.
