National Doctors’ Day commemorates the day in 1842 when anesthesia was first used in surgery. In 1933, Eudora Brown Winder, wife of a Winder, Ga., doctor—Charles B. Almond, MD—led the charge to set aside a special day for physicians. The first such observation was March 30 of that year. On March 30, 1958, a Resolution Commemorating Doctors’ Day was adopted by the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed legislation approved by the U.S. House and Senate establishing the date as a national day of recognition for physicians. The red carnation is commonly used as the symbolic flower for National Doctors' Day.
