Among news items in this quarter’s newsletter were the following:

Sleep Disorders in the ICU: After three years of work, an official American Thoracic Society (ATS) Research Statement on Causes, Consequences, and Treatments of Sleep and Circadian Disruption in the ICU was released April 1, 2023. Pulmonary Division Chief Sairam Parthasarathy, MD, was a member of this project. The report was published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. This effort was in response to rising concern that sleep and circadian disruption (SCD) is common and severe in the ICU. On the basis of rigorous evidence in non-ICU populations and emerging evidence in ICU populations, SCD is likely to have a profound negative impact on patient outcomes. The report also appeared in the July 10 Clinical Voices report of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.
