A baker’s dozen of faculty members recently received promotions within the University of Arizona Department of Medicine. They represent seven of the department’s divisions. The following promotions become effective as of July 1.
Six faculty members were named full professors, four as tenured faculty and two as clinical scholars. Seven were made associate professors, two as tenured faculty, three as clinical scholars and two in the clinical series ranks.
Department Chair James K. Liao, MD, congratulated all of those who were recognized for advancement. “I’m glad we were able to reward these faculty members for their hard work, diligence and dedication to the profession of academic medicine. I encourage others to consult with our faculty development and human resources teams to pursue their own promotion and tenure goals,” Dr. Liao added.
Among 2022-23 advancing faculty are:
- Fariba Donovan, MD, PhD, in the Division of Infectious Diseases, joined UArizona in April 2017. She had been an assistant professor and has been promoted to tenured associate professor. Dr. Donovan also is a researcher in the Valley Fever Center for Excellence and a member of the graduate faculty and BIO5 Institute.
- Paul R. Langlais, PhD, in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism, joined UArizona in October 2016. Already an associate professor, he has now been granted tenure. Dr. Langlais also is director of the Quantitative Proteomics Laboratory and a member of the Center for Disparities in Diabetes, Obesity & Metabolism and graduate faculty, specifically the Physiological Sciences Graduate Interdisciplinary Program.
- Rachna Shroff, MD, MS, in the Division of Hematology & Oncology, joined UArizona in January 2018. Currently interim division chief, Dr. Shroff is an associate professor who has been promoted to tenured professor. In addition to a number of hats she wears, she is College of Medicine – Tucson associate dean, Clinical and Translational Research; and chief, Section of GI Medical Oncology, leader, GI Clinical Research Team, and director, Clinical Trials Office, at the UArizona Cancer Center.
- Jennifer S. Carew, PhD, in the Division of Hematology & Oncology joined UArizona in March 2016. Co-director of the Hematologic Malignancy Disease Team at the UArizona Cancer Center, she has been promoted from tenured associate professor to full professor.
- Steffan T. Nawrocki, PhD, in the Division of Hematology & Oncology joined UArizona in September 2016. Previously a tenured associate professor, he’ll be a full professor. Dr. Nawrocki is research director for Translational Medical Oncology at the UArizona Cancer Center as well as the Department of Urology. He has additional appointments with the Cancer Biology Graduate Interdisciplinary Program, Clinical Translational Sciences and as a member of the graduate faculty.
- Deepak Acharya, MD, MSPH, in the Division of Cardiology, joined UArizona in September 2019. An associate professor on the clinical scholar track, he’ll now be a full professor. Dr. Acharya also is program director of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship and a member of the Sarver Heart Center.
- Sachin Chaudhary, MD, in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine, joined UArizona in July 2018. A lung transplant pulmonologist, he is director of the Interstitial Lung Disease Program. An assistant professor on the clinical scholar track, he’s been promoted to associate professor.
- Krisstina Gowin, DO, in the Division of Hematology & Oncology, joined UArizona in August 2018. She’s been promoted from an assistant professor in the clinical scholar track to associate professor. Dr. Gowin also is program director of the division’s Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship and founding director of the Integrative Medicine in Hematology Oncology Fellowship at the UArizona Cancer Center.
- Abhijeet Kumar, MD, in the Division of Hematology & Oncology, joined UArizona in June 2016 following his fellowship training here. Previously an assistant professor on the clinical series track, he has been promoted to associate professor.
- Sangeetha Murugapandian, MBBS, in the Division of Nephrology, joined UArizona in March 2017. She previously had done her residency training in internal medicine here. She has been promoted from assistant professor in the clinical series track to associate professor. Dr. Murugapandian also is associate program director of the Nephrology Fellowship.
- Franz Rischard, DO, in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine, joined UArizona in October 2010. He is medical director of the Adult Pulmonary Hypertension Program. An associate professor on the clinical scholar track, he’ll now be a full professor.
- Serena Scott, MD, in the Division of General Internal Medicine, Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, joined UArizona in July 2016. An assistant professor on the clinical scholar track, she’ll now be an associate professor. Dr. Scott also is the department’s vice chair of faculty development.
- Amy Sussman, MD, in the Division of Nephrology, joined UArizona in August 2009. An associate professor on the clinical scholar track, she has been promoted to full professor. Dr. Sussman also is Nephrology Fellowship Program director, Internal Medicine Clerkship director, and vice chair of education for the department.
In addition, Jarrod Mosier, MD, an Emergency Medicine faculty member with a secondary appointment in Medicine as associate program director for the Critical Care Fellowship in our department's Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, was made a tenured professor.
