Dr. Herbst earned her bachelor’s degree in zoology and doctorate in cellular physiology from the University of Iowa. She completed her medical degree at Chicago’s Rush Medical College and did her residency in internal medicine and fellowship in metabolism, endocrinology and nutrition at the University of Washington in Seattle, where she was also chief resident. In addition, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Eccles Institute of Human Genetics at the University of Utah, identifying ribosomal protein L9 and mRNA interactions that facilitated research on other interactions. She was recruited to the UA from the University of California – San Diego, where she also had been a research scientist at the Veteran’s Medical Research Foundation and weight control clinic director at the VA San Diego Healthcare System. Among her honors and awards, she won the Pioneer Award from the Fat Disorders Research Society, was elected to the Rare Disease Hall of Fame and was named the 2015 Producer’s Choice Humanitarian of the Year at the 25th Annual Los Angeles Music Awards.
