Retirement Reception for Drs. Kent Kwoh and Elizabeth Connick

The Department of Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson hosted a retirement party in the collge's Social Hall on Dec. 6, 2024, for C. Kent Kwoh, MD, MACR, and Elizabeth Connick, MD. Dr. Kwoh, who joined the UofA faculty in 2013, was stepping down as chief of the Division of Rheumatology, but retaining his role as director of the Arizona Arthritis Center. Dr. Connick, who joined the faculty in 2016, was the chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases. Both have been renowned and respected researchers globally, Dr. Kwoh on osteoarthritis and Dr. Connick on AIDS/HIV studies.

2024 Clinical Trials Development Workshop

The University of Arizona Cancer Center and Division of Hematology & Oncology Chief Rachna Shroff, MD, MS, hosted the annual Clinical Trials Development Workshop on June 21, 2024, at the UAHS Health Sciences Innovation Building. Among speakers and panelists from the Department of Medicine at the College of Medicine – Tucson were: Hem-Onc’s Aaron Scott, MD, co-leader, Clinical and Translational Oncology Program; Pulmonary division chief and director, Center for Sleep, Circadian & Neuroscience Research, Sairam Parthasarathy, MD; and Daniel Butler, MD, director, Inflammatory & Aging Skin Research Program, Division of Dermatology.

Research Academic Half Day 2024 for UArizona Internal Medicine Residency Program

University of Arizona Internal Medicine Residency Program – Tucson Campus resident physicians (as well as the occasional fellow) take part in the annual research poster contest that's a big highlight for the spring semester for the Department of Medicine on the UAHS main campus in Tucson. Held May 23, 2024, the competition this year included oral presentations in Lecture Hall 5403 as well as the traditional poster presentations in the College of Medicine – Tucson Social Hall.

Public Open House for New AWCIM Complex

The new Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine complex of buildings held a series of events in the two weeks around its Annual Integrative Medicine Summit, including a Public Open House on Saturday, May 4, 2024. Professor of medicine, nutritional science and psychology, Dr. Esther Sternberg, who also is the center's research director, offered a brief orientation followed by tours of the Mind, Body & Spirit buildings that make up the new home for the center, which is part of the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson.

AWCIM Panel on Transforming Healthcare in the U.S.

Held April 23, 2024, in the Health Sciences Innovation Building at the University of Arizona in Tucson, the panel included Drs. Andrew Weil, Deepak Chopra and Jon Kabat-Zinn with Dr. Mari Ricker serving as moderator. The panel discussion focused on mindfulness, wellness and wellbeing, highlighting the theme: 'Drawing on the Power of Integrative Medicine.' It was hosted by the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine.

2024 Department of Medicine Annual Awards Ceremony

In a return to the Arizona Inn for this event with DOM Chair Dr. James K. Liao as host, two Class of 2024 medical students won dual honors: Lupita Molina for top student in nephrology and endocrinology; and Michael Haekwang Kim for infectious diseases and rheumatology. Other key honors included Dr. Daniel Brown – Residency Director's Award; Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine chief fellow Dr. Sarah Upson – Outstanding Medicine Fellow, and Lauren Murphy – the J.W. Smith Outstanding Medical Student of the Year.

'Cookin' Docs' and Gluten-Free Diets at Hacienda at the River

Led by Juanita Merchant, MD, PhD, professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at the UArizona College of Medicine – Tucson, a group of diet-conscious physicians join executive chef David Sullivan at the Hacienda at the River retirement community to share tips with residents on how to eat a tasty gluten-free diet if you suffer from celiac disease. The plate of the day was ratatouille with three differently flavored sauces over rice, noodles and quinoa. This special event was the kickoff to a series of similar Docs in the Kitchen/Cookin’ Docs culinary tasting demonstrations to show how healthy eating doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice flavor.

Dr. John T. "Jack" Boyer Memorial

The family and friends of the late John T. “Jack” Boyer, MD, hosted a celebration of life May 16, 2023, in the HSIB Forum of the Health Sciences Innovation Building. The University of Arizona College of Medicine Tucson founding physician launched three divisions in the Department of Medicine, including Rheumatology, Geriatrics and Hematology-Oncology. Health Sciences senior vice president, Dr. Michael Dake said it further strengthens UArizona’s position as a global leader in sleep medicine.

2023 Annual Awards Ceremony

The University of Arizona Department of Medicine 2023 Awards Ceremony highlighted 23 students, residents and fellows in internal medicine with 26 honors for outstanding achievement at the HSIB Forum. A fellow, 11 residents and 11 medical students were recognized. Multiple awards went to students Rosemarie Turk (3) and Connor Vuong (2), both graduating this spring. Impressed by the number of honorees returning for residency or fellowship training, Department Chair James Liao, MD, said excellence in teaching awards will return next year.
