Brought to you by the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy:
TOPIC: “Ultrafine Particulate Matter (PM) and the Developing Lung”
SPEAKER: Laura S. Van Winkle, PhD | Professor of Respiratory Toxicology/Professor-in-Residence, School of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Anatomy, Physiology & Cell Biology, UC Davis
Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2019
4 p.m.
College of Pharmacy, Skaggs Building, Room 325
About This Topic:
Particulate matter in the fine (PM2.5) and ultrafine (PM0.1) size fractions is known to impact human health and exacerbate respiratory disease. Much of the toxicology research has focused on the adult lung and those with preexisting respiratory disease. What we do not understand well is how PM impacts lung growth and development, especially when exposures occur in the early postnatal period. This is critically important because early life exposures can have long-lasting effects. Further, a better understanding of where particles go in the lung also is important from a therapeutic standpoint. This presentation will explore the impacts of early life exposure to particulate matter in the developing rat lung using novel methods to measure lung growth and follow particle disposition in vivo.
