Annual screening mammograms can detect breast cancer early and when it is most treatable. Mammograms can show changes in the breast up to two years before a patient or physician can feel them. The American College of Radiology and the Society of Breast Imaging recommend annual bilateral screening mammography beginning at age 40 for most women, even if they have no symptoms or family history of breast cancer.
