"Reducing Racial and Socioeconomic Disparities in CKD"
Milda Saunders, MD
Dr. Saunders is the Interim Associate Dean of Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago.  She is a hospitalist, a health services researcher, and a patient advocate. Her research examines socioeconomic and health system barriers that prevent patients with CKD from receiving high quality care. She recently received an NIDDK K23 grant to develop a hospital-based patient education and referral program for patients with advanced CKD. Dr. Saunders serves as a patient advocate within the Medical Center. She is the Living Donor Advocate Physician for the UCM Transplant Center. She see's potential donors in clinic and work with a multi-disciplinary team to help them make an informed decision. Dr. Saunders attends on the Clinical Ethics Service and serve as a Research Subject Advocate for the Institute of Translational Medicine.

Specific Aims:

  • To understand variation by race/ethnicity, SES and neighborhood in kidney disease in the US
  • To evaluate the structural factors that lead to health inequities
  • To identify potential solutions at the personal, local and national level to reduce CKD disparities
