Evolving our thinking on T cell activation and CAR engineering

Fri, 09/01/2023 - 11:00am to 12:00pm

The Immunobiology Seminar Series presents:  "Evolving our thinking on T cell activation and CAR engineering"

Balding white man wearing a grey shirt stands outside smiling.Michael Kuhns, PhD
Professor, Department of Immunobiology
University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson

The Kuhns lab is working to understand how the information that is critical for T cells to decide if and how they should respond to antigen is conveyed from an APC to a T cell, and how aging impacts this signaling throughout the lifespan. They use a variety of classic molecular, cellular and biochemical techniques, as well as more modern live cell imaging approaches, to probe the molecular mechanisms involved in these processes. They are also developing mouse model systems to determine how individual mechanisms contribute to T cell responses in vivo during pathogenic infection or autoimmunity. Finally, they have projects aimed at applying the knowledge gained from their basic research to the design of novel modular bionsensors with therapeutic potential. Altogether, the overarching goal of the lab is to increase basic and practical appreciation of T cell development, activation and the execution of effector functions.
