Presenter: A professor of dermatology at Harvard Medical School, the Richard Allen Johnson, MD, Endowed Chair in Dermatology at Massachusetts General Hospital, and an associate member of MIT/Harvard’s Broad Institute, Dr. Hensin Tsao serves as director of both the hospital’s Melanoma Genetics Program, which he established, and its Melanoma and Pigmented Lesion Center, which is the oldest multidisciplinary melanoma unit in the country. He’s also founding head of the hospital’s Skin Cancer Genetics Laboratory in the Wellman Center for Photomedicine, where he oversees a research program in melanoma genetics and therapeutics on which he has delivered over 300 presentations worldwide.
Dr. Tsao graduated from Brown University with a degree in biochemistry and English, and earned his medical degree from Columbia University with a doctorate in biophysics/biochemistry. He completed a year of clinical training in internal medicine, two years of dermatology residency and a melanoma fellowship in Harvard-affiliated hospitals. He concluded his training with a postdoctoral fellowship in the Division of Oncology at Massachusetts General. As faculty, he joined the Wellman Center for Photomedicine and Department of Dermatology in 2001.
Funders of Dr. Tsao’s research include the National Institutes of Health, American Skin Association, Dermatology Foundation, American Cancer Society, Department of Defense and Melanoma Research Alliance. He’s the author of over 230 peer-reviewed research articles, reviews, abstracts, textbook chapters and online media texts. Among his many awards are the Alfred Steiner Dean’s Award and Titus Munson Coan Prize from Columbia University; Deborah Shalita Marmour Clinical Career Development Award from the Dermatology Foundation; Young Investigator Award, Marion Sulzberger Award and Presidential Citation Award from the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD); D.M. Carter Award and Howard Milstein Innovation Award from the American Skin Association; and William Montagna Award & Lectureship from the Society for Investigative Dermatology. Internationally, he has received the coveted Kung Sung Oh Memorial Lecture & Award from Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea. Dr. Tsao also has been selected as one of Boston’s Top Doctors (2010-2019) and inducted into the American Dermatological Association and American Society for Clinical Investigation in 2008 and 2009, respectively.
Dr. Tsao serves or has served on numerous committees. In the American Academy of Dermatology, he’s been chair of the Melanoma/Skin Cancer Committee, co-chair of the Melanoma Guidelines Committee, chair of the Education Committee, chair of the Task Force on the ABCDE’s of Melanoma, and a member of many others. He was chair of the Education Committee for the Society for Investigative Dermatology and a member of the Melanoma/Skin Cancer Committee of the American Society for Clinical Oncology. In addition, Dr. Tsao is a director of the American Board of Dermatology. He’s also on the editorial board of the British Journal of Dermatology, Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, Journal of Investigative Dermatology and International Journal of Oncology, and was editor-in-chief for Journal Watch/Dermatology. He has served or continues to serve on study sections for the NIH, Dermatology Foundation, American Cancer Society, Melanoma Research Alliance, and Cancer UK. Lastly, he is on the medical advisory board of the IMPACT Melanoma.
