Gokhan Mutlu, MD

Gokhan M Mutlu, MD is Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Section of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Chicago. He also serves as the Director of T32 Respiratory Biology Training Program. Dr. Mutlu’s research focuses on the mechanisms of acute lung injury/ARDS, lung inflammation and pulmonary fibrosis. Currently, his laboratory studies how cellular metabolism supports cell function in macrophages, and fibroblasts and how their metabolism is altered during acute lung injury and fibrosis. In addition to his work in ARDS and pulmonary fibrosis, Dr. Mutlu has made important contributions to environmental health sciences research. His laboratory discovered the mechanistic link between particulate matter air pollution and acute thrombotic events including the role of IL-6 and sympathetic nervous system activation. For his work in environmental health sciences, Dr. Mutlu received the prestigious Outstanding New Environmental Scientist (ONES) Award from the NIEHS in 2006. Since then, he has expanded this work into understanding the role of lung macrophage metabolism and epigenetics through additional funding from the NIEHS.

Dr. Mutlu’s research has been continuously funded by NIH since 2006. In addition, he has received funding from the Department of Defense, American Heart Association and American Lung Association. He is an elected member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation and Association of American Physicians. He has published more than 170 papers in preeminent journals such as JCI, PNAS, Cell Metabolism, Circulation Research. ELife and AJRCCM. He has served as an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, and American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology for more than 10 years. Dr. Mutlu has also served as a standing member of the NIH Environmental Health Sciences (EHS) Review Committee. He has recently been appointed as a member of the National Advisory Environmental Health Sciences Council (NAEHSC).
