Presenter: A recent addition to the Department of Medicine's faculty, Dr. Farr is an associate professor of medicine in the Division of Rheumatology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson. In addition, he serves as the Ethel McChesney Bilby Chair for Osteoporosis Research in the University of Arizona Arthritis Center. Over the past 10 years at the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN), Dr. Farr’s work has been seminal in the systematic identification of senescent cells in the bone microenvironment with aging in mice and humans and in demonstrating a causal role of senescent cells in mediating age-related bone loss in old mice. He more recently served as PI on a phase 2 randomized controlled trial to test the effects of intermittent senolytic therapy on bone metabolism in postmenopausal women, demonstrating that the clinical response to senolytics is driven by the underlying senescent cell burden, which has key implications for the future development of senolytic drugs. Dr. Farr’s laboratory at the University of Arizona will focus on the roles of senescent cells in mediating aging and chronic diseases.
