Presenter: Dr. Merchant is Regents Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology/ Hepatology at the University of Arizona. She holds a joint appointment in the Department of Physiological Sciences and the Department of Physiology, is Associate Director for Basic Research, and more recently, is interim Director of the UA Comprehensive Cancer Center. A native of Los Angeles, she received her BS in biology from Stanford University and completed her MD and PhD in Cell Biology at Yale School of Medicine. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston and subsequently a post-residency GI fellowship in molecular biology at MGH. Subsequently she completed her clinical GI fellowship at UCLA. She was a Professor at the University of Michigan from 1991-2018 prior to her recruitment to the University of Arizona in 2018. As a molecular gastroenterologist, Dr. Merchant’s primary research interests include transcriptional control mechanisms regulating cell growth and differentiation and microbial-host interactions in the gastrointestinal tract. She has published over 160 research publications and is the editor or co-editor of four books and multiple book chapters. She is currently an associate editor for Cellular and Molecular Gastroenterology, Nature Reviews Gastroenterology/Hepatology and Gastroenterology, and serves on the Editorial Board of the Annual Review of Physiology. She is a member of several professional associations, including the AAP and ASCI.  She was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2008 and to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2017. She currently serves on both the AAP and National Academy of Medicine Councils. She is a member of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research Scientific Advisory Council and serves on the Dean's Scientific Advisory Board for Yale School of Medicine.

[Junaid Arshad]

 

Dr. Junaid Arshad is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and faculty member of GI Medical Oncology. He received his medical degree from King Edward Medical University, Lahore, Pakistan. He completed his Internal medicine Residency at St. Mary's Hospital, Waterbury, CT. He has joined the Cancer Center after his Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship from University of Miami, FL. Dr. Arshad is a Clinical and Translational Scientist with a focus on developing novel therapeutics for several areas of Upper GI Oncology. Dr. Arshad's Clinical and Research focus targets mainly the Upper GI Oncology including Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors, Gastric Cancers, Esophageal Cancers and Neuroendocrine Tumors. He is a part of several clinical trials and has contributed to several peer reviewed publications. His prior research focuses on the use of biomarkers such as circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in the diagnosis, treatment and surveillance of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors. He has expanded his areas of research interest to include other disease modalities such as Neuroendocrine Cancers.
