Presenter: Dr. Sean Wu is recognized internationally for his scientific discoveries in the transcriptional regulation of cardiac development and the application of high throughput technologies to understand heart development and disease. He completed his undergraduate degrees at Stanford University, his MD-PhD and medical residency training at Duke University and a clinical and research fellowship in adult cardiology at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School and a research fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital. He was an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Cardiovascular Research Center at MGH before joining the faculty at Stanford University School of Medicine in 2012 where is now Professor Medicine and, by courtesy, Pediatrics, the Joan and Sanford I Weil Scholar and Associate Director of the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute as well as the Vice Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. His laboratory has contributed significantly to the cardiac regenerative medicine and stem cell biology fields where his work has been funded by the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award, NIH Director’s Pioneer Award, the American Heart Association (AHA) Established Investigator Award, the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine, the NHLBI Progenitor Cell Biology Consortium, and is currently supported by the NIGMS RM1 Multidisciplinary Collaborative Grant, ARPA-H, multiple-PI and collaborative MPI NIH R01 grants, the NSF-RECODE, and the Additional Venture Foundation, among others. Over the past 17 years, his laboratory has trained more than 85 individuals including 31 post-doctoral and 25 pre-doctoral fellows. He has served on many editorial boards for journals such as Circulation Research, Current Cardiology Report, and as the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Current Treatment Options in Cardiovascular Medicine. He has received several awards and honors including the David Lawrence Stein Award (2014), the 2018 Kenneth D. Bloch Memorial Lecturer in Vascular Biology, the Consulting Editor of the Year for the journal Circulation Research (2018), and the Distinguished Achievement Award (2022) from the AHA. He has been elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of University Cardiologists, and the Association of American Physicians.
