Presenter: Dr. Fotios Koumpouras is Assistant Professor Medicine, Director of the Yale Lupus Program. Dr. Koumpouras was born and raised in New York City, New York, and is a graduate of the Stuyvesant School. He completed his college education at State University of New York with honors and graduated first in his class from medical school, completed post-graduate training in internal medicine and was Chief Medical Resident at Stony Brook University. He completed a clinical and investigative rheumatology fellowship program at Yale University School of Medicine. He was awarded the Physician Scientist Development Award and was co-PI for the ILAR project geared to improve for rheumatologic services in East Africa.
Dr. Koumpouras worked closely with Dr. Susan Manzi at the University of Pittsburgh and was involved in both investigator initiated and pharmaceutical clinical trials for SLE and was principal site investigator for several clinical trials. Dr. Koumpouras was site investigator for BLISS 99, a trial that lead to the breakthrough approval of Benlysta for the treatment of SLE.
Dr. Koumpouras directed the Specialty Care Center for infusions at Walgreen’s in Pittsburgh, and oversaw the medical short stay unit at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital. He served on the system wide Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee at AHN.
In addition to his primary responsibility in rheumatology, Dr. Koumpouras is the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra tour physician.
Dr. Koumpouras is board certified in both internal medicine and rheumatology. In addition to SLE, Dr. Koumpouras has an interest in lupus biomarkers, pregnancy in rheumatic disease, psoriatic arthritis, diagnostic and treatment dilemmas.
