Three Pulmonary & Critical Care fellows learned Wednesday they earned the University of Arizona and Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine recognition by the American College of Chest Physicians as one of the “Top 3 Institutions” in the United States in the CHEST Challenge—an online medical knowledge competition that began this spring and closed May 30.

The 10 top-scoring programs are given free registration to both CHEST 2016 and a CHEST Board Review course. The top three teams also are provided airfare, complimentary hotel rooms and cash prizes to play in the CHEST Challenge final round—which will be held live on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 8:45 a.m. (PST).

James Knepler, MD, program director for the Pulmonary & Critical Care Fellowship, noted the high quality of the fellowship program enables the UA to attract some of the sharpest physicians into our program.

He, the program’s associate director Josh Malo, MD, and Pulmonary division chair Ken Knox, MD, congratulated Drs. Mahmoud, Omar and Ateeli on their accomplishment and the credit it brings to the fellowship program.

The other two programs they’ll compete against will be announced when all have accepted participation in the final competition. Questions for the highly competitive event are prepared by experts in pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine.

The CHEST conference attracts more than 5,000 attendees each fall. This year’s keynote speakers include Charity Sunshine Tilleman, an American-born soprano and recipient of two-double lung transplants who’ll be speaking about her experience and singing. In addition, Tamara McCleary, RN, the CEO of brand and social media company Thulium, and Kare Anderson, an Emmy-winning former NBC and Wall Street Journal reporter, will talk about, “The Positively Unforgettable Face of Your Brand.” Learn more at www.chestnet.org
