The University of Arizona Department of Medicine contingent at the ATS 2017 International Conference has been sharing a few photo postcards of their activities at the annual conference of the American Thoracic Society in Washington, DC, this week—May 19-24.
A fellow, two residents and a medical student—respectively, Suresh Mereddy, MD, Kushboo Goel, MD, See Wei Low, MBBS, and Todd Golden—won abstract ATS Abstract Scholarships to attend. Dr. Low’s scholarship was presented on behalf of the National Emphysema Foundation.
Another fellow—Joshua Dill, DO—and Dr. Low won DOM Bressler-Alpert Society Travel Awards to attend ATS 2017. Drs. Low and Goel, and Golden are pictured with faculty mentors Cristine Berry, MD, MHS, and Christian Bime, MD, assistant professors, UA Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine (PACCS), in the first photo below.
And a number of other faculty, fellows and residents from the department, PACCS, as well as the Asthma and Airway Disease Research Center at the UA Health Sciences also are moderating sessions, giving presentations and attending, too.

ABOVE: Drs. Cristine Berry (DOM faculty) and See Wei Low, UA third-year medical student Todd Golden, and Drs. Khushboo Goel and Christian Bime (DOM faculty). Drs. Low and Goel are residents in the UA Internal Medicine Residency Program - Tucson Campus. They're at the ATS Clinical Problems Assembly to receive their ATS Abstract Scholarship Awards. Dr. Low presented on her work: ""Endobronchial Valves Therapy for Advanced Emphysema: A Meta-Analysis." Her mentors were DOM faculty Drs. James Knepler and Sachin Chaudhary.
ABOVE: UA medical student Todd Golden and Dr. Laith Ghazala, chief resident, UA Internal Medicine Residency Program - Tucson Campus. They are at an ATS poster discussion session on COPD Progression and Prognosis on Sunday, May 21. The abstract was entitled "Frailty Assessment for Predicting Readmission and Discharge Disposition among Patients Hospitalized for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Exacerbation." It was supported by the UA Center on Aging and a Banner Health Innovations Grant. Todd, the presenter, received an ATS Abstract Scholarship Award from the National Emphysema Foundation. Drs. Ghazala and Berry were his mentors on the work.
ABOVE: UA medical student Todd Golden and Dr. Khushboo Goel, a resident in the UA Internal Medicine Residency Program - Tucson Campus. Dr. Goel gave an oral presentation on Wednesday, May 24, entitled "Trends in COPD Hospitalization and In-Hospital Mortality in the United States by Sex: 2005-2014." Her ATS Abstract Scholarship Award was provided by the ATS Clinical Problems Assembly. Drs. Berry and Bime were her mentors on the work.
