A nearly overwhelming number of job seekers showed up for a Banner Health Hiring Event held Thursday, Sept. 14, at Banner – University Medical Center Tucson.
The job fair originally was scheduled to be held in rooms off the hospital cafeteria, but had to be quickly relocated to DuVal Auditorium because about 400 people had RSVP’d ahead of time. Well over 100 more walk-ins showed to find out about and apply for the 250 postings of available jobs at clinical facilities for both the Banner – UMC Tucson and South hospitals.

Wendy Andrews, Banner’s oncology practice administrator in Tucson, said an additional 17 positions had opened up at the UA Cancer Center clinical facilities at Banner – UMC North Campus and Orange Grove Campus. She's pictured below (in middle of photo on right in second row) with Jacqueline Echave and John Barril, Banner practice supervisors.
When the event began at 4 p.m., Andrews said, just about every seat was taken in DuVal Auditorium and more folks were filing in to speak with Banner recruiters and staff about employment opportunities. A steady stream of signups, resumé submissions and discussions continued up to the event’s scheduled end at 7 p.m.
“We heard from a lot of good prospects,” Andrews said excitedly. “I’m very happy. There were a mix of folks, some experienced, others who’d just graduated and were looking for a job and, then, a lot who were interested about making a career change to health care and wanted to learn more.”
Amy Valencia, RN, critical care nursing director at Banner – UMC Tucson, confessed to being exhausted but pleasantly pleased with the evening’s turnout. She's pictured on right in the third row of the photo gallery below wearing a white coat with three other nurses on her team, Mary, Marcos and Anelis.
Critical care is included in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine in the Department of Medicine.
“This is fabulous, particularly with completion nearing on the new Banner – UMC North Campus outpatient clinical center,” said department Chair Monica Kraft, MD, who also serves as deputy director of the UA Asthma and Airway Disease Research Center and the Robert and Irene Flinn Endowed Chair of Medicine at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson.
“A number of our department’s clinics will move to the new facility, which will offer the latest cutting-edge care with complementary clinical services carefully matched to enhance the multidisciplinary approach our divisions bring with regard to physician specialist teams available for all the health care needs of our patients.”
The 200,000-square-foot, three-story tower is expected to be done this fall with several UA Department of Medicine clinics relocating from the UA Health Sciences campus and Banner – UMC Tucson hospital at 1501 N. Campbell Ave. to north campus.
The new Banner outpatient center along with an adjacent parking garage lie between UACC Peter and Paula Fasseas Cancer Clinic, 3838 N. Campbell Ave., and the Ronald McDonald House of Southern Arizona, 2155 E. Allen Road. Expect news later this fall on the grand opening in early January 2018.
