Congratulations to 114 University of Arizona medical students who matched into residency programs today, March 16—Match Day 2018 for U.S. medical schools and students who’ll graduate this spring and become doctors when residency programs begin July 1.

The Match is held annually at U.S. medical schools, with all medical students opening their envelopes simultaneously (locally at 10 a.m.) across the country to find out where they’ll do their training as resident physicians.

A third of medical students in the UA Class of 2018 will remain in Arizona to pursue their residency training. More than half will pursue primary care—a physician specialty critically low in Arizona and the nation.

Dermatology Residency Program

In dermatology, three students matched into the local residency program, one of whom will start this summer—the rest will do an internship year elsewhere and start here in summer 2019. Derm residents generally do an intern year at a different facility from where they do their residency.

“Since we received increased funding from the VA, this is allowing Dr. Rebecca Thiede (see more on her below), to start this July, even though she did just go through the match this season. She is starting along with the three that matched last year: Drs. Loh, Turnock and Vasic,” said Mary Dickinson, program coordinator, UA Advanced Dermatology Residency.
