TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona Health Sciences and Banner Health are hosting an open-to-the-public awareness event about the national All of Us Research Program on Thursday, Nov. 15. Food and beverages will be provided to those in attendance. The event is being held to raise awareness of the All of Us Research Program’s ambitious effort to gather data from one million or more people living in the United States to accelerate health research.
The public event will take place at the Banner – University Medicine Family Medicine Clinic, 707 N. Alvernon Way, Tucson, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the west end of the parking lot.
The event seeks to raise awareness of the program’s mid-town enrollment site and to provide the public with the opportunity to learn how the All of Us Research Program seeks to transform research and improve health through the recruitment of research participants who reflect the diversity of America. During the event, the public will have the opportunity to learn about the All of Us Research Program and its clinic at 655 N. Alvernon Way, while enjoying a Sonoran hot dog, drink and music, as well as a slice of cake.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) leads the All of Us Research Program, and the University of Arizona and Banner Health are partners in this precision medicine effort. The UA and Banner Health enroll participants within 14 sites located in Phoenix, Tucson and Nogales.
Precision medicine is an innovative approach to disease prevention and treatment that takes into account individual differences in people’s environments, lifestyles and genes. Precision medicine gives clinicians tools to better understand the complex mechanisms underlying a person’s health, disease or condition, and to better predict which treatments will be most effective.
Unlike a single research study focused on a specific disease or population, All of Us will serve as a national research resource to inform thousands of studies, covering a wide variety of health conditions that affect many different people.
All eligible adults who live in the United States can join the All of Us Research Program and U.S. citizenship or permanent residency are not needed to enroll. Only people who are 18 or older can join. There are three ways to join:
- Visit the All of Us website, AllofUsAZ.org.
- Download the All of Us Research Program app (Google Play or iTunes).
- Visit one of the Banner Health locations listed at AllofUsAZ.org/locations.
Participants will be asked to create an account, give consent, agree to share access to their electronic health records and to answer health surveys. They also may be invited to visit a Banner Health site for a free appointment to have their physical measurements taken and to provide blood and urine samples. Upon completion of all of these activities, participants are compensated $25.
Participants will have opportunities over many years to provide additional data about themselves that will help researchers learn more about how individual differences in lifestyle, environment and biological makeup can influence health and disease. By taking part, participants will contribute to an effort to advance the health of generations to come.
All of Us Research Program specialists will be available during the event to answer any questions about the All of Us Research Program.
