Banner - University Medicine Names New Leadership

Larry M. GoldbergOn Feb. 21, Banner Health announced to its boards, employees and physicians that Larry M. Goldberg will become president of Banner – University Medicine effective April 30. He replaces the current president, Kathy Bollinger, who will delay her retirement until the end of May to ensure a smooth transition for Banner’s Tucson and Phoenix academic medical centers.

“I’m confident Larry’s experience and expertise will support and strengthen our valued relationship with the University of Arizona. He has a true appreciation for the benefit of academic medicine in an integrated delivery system,” said Becky Kuhn, chief operating officer for Banner.

In this role, Goldberg will oversee Banner’s three academic medical centers: Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix, Banner – University Medical Center South and Banner – University Medical Center Tucson, in addition to Banner – University Medical Group. He will be responsible for assuring ongoing operational efficiency and clinical excellence, as well as continued investment in our relationship with the University of Arizona.

“I am honored to have been offered this opportunity to lead Banner – University Medicine and look forward to working with the leadership team to build upon the rich history of the organization while securing our future in a dynamic environment,” Goldberg said.

Goldberg has had a distinguished career in the health-care industry with extensive academic experience. He most recently served as regional president and chief executive officer of Trinity Health’s Illinois region, which includes Loyola University Health System (LUHS) and Mercy Hospital & Medical Center. LUHS is an academic health system offering quaternary care at Loyola University Medical Center, a 547-bed teaching hospital, and community based at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, a 247-bed hospital, as well as a large ambulatory network with more than 20 locations in three counties. The system has teaching affiliations with Loyola University Chicago’s Stritch School of Medicine and Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing.

Under his leadership, Loyola was named by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top three hospitals in the state with six nationally ranked specialties and was the only Illinois health system named by Forbes magazine to its “America’s Best Mid-Sized Employers.” Goldberg organized care, quality and financial reporting into 42 clinically integrated programs in multiple specialties including cardiovascular, oncology, organ transplant, neurosciences, musculoskeletal care, digestive disease, etc. He improved and expanded graduate medical education programs and developed more than 70 affiliations for the medical center with local hospitals, health systems and physician groups.

Bollinger, known for her legacy of performance, collaboration and compassionate leadership, announced her intent to retire late last year. Bollinger was a key force in establishing Banner’s affiliation with the University of Arizona and transitioning the former University of Arizona Health Network into Banner. She has held senior and executive leadership positions at Banner, and predecessor organization Lutheran Health Systems, for more than 30 years.
