Raj Janardhanan, MD, of the University of Arizona Division of Cardiology and UA Sarver Heart Center, has accepted positions with the American Society of Echocardiography, as a member-at-large on the Industry Relations Committee, and the United Kingdom-based Faculty of 1000 (F1000), as co-head of the Valvular Disease Section.
A UA associate professor of medicine and medical imaging, Dr. Janardhanan is medical director for non-invasive cardiac imaging and director of echocardiography at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson and Banner – University Medical Center Tucson. He joined the UA faculty in 2013.
Based in London, F1000 is the publisher of services that support and inform the work of life scientists and clinicians. F1000Prime publishes recommendations by 10,000-plus scientists and clinical researchers on biology and medicine articles on 32 disciplines covering about 3,700 journals. F1000Research is an open access peer-review scientific platform covering life sciences. And F1000Workspace is a suite of tools to help scientists with writing, collaborating, reference management and preparation to publish scientific papers. The company is part of the Science Navigation Group, which also owns Web of Stories.
The Valvular Disease Section was previously headed by Joseph S. Alpert, MD, Vincent L. Sorrell, MD, and Alec P. Vahanian, MD. Dr. Alpert is a fellow member of the UA Division of Cardiology faculty and UA Sarver Heart Center, a past chair of the UA Department of Medicine, and editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Medicine. Dr. Sorrell, a former UA faculty member, is the Anthony N. DeMaria Professor of Medicine and Radiology, chair of cardiovascular imaging, and assistant division chief for cardiovascular medicine, at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. Dr. Valhanian is head of the cardiology department at Bichat-Claude Bernard Hospital in Paris and professor of cardiology at the Université Paris Diderot, also known as Paris 7 as an heir of the University of Paris that ceased to exist in 1970. Dr. Vahanian chaired the valvular heart disease guidelines task force for the European Society of Cardiology in 2007 and 2012 as well as its education committee (2012-16), and currently chairs its European Observational Registry Program.
Dr. Janardhanan takes the position of Dr. Vahanian, who recently stepped down from his role at F1000, and Drs. Alpert and Sorrell remain as co-heads.
The ASE role for Dr. Janardhanan is a reappointment to serve another year on the Industry Relations Committee.
“We try to bring all the folks in the industry together, find out what they are working on and how ASE can support them, and tell them where ASE’s interests are each year so they can align their activities with ASE,” he said.
“This also generates funds for ASE when these companies set up their booths at the ASE annual meeting or if they want to host luncheons during the conference to highlight their products. Industry is one of the key source for funding. But the idea of the committee is to support the appropriate companies who are willing to work with ASE to move the field forward.”
