Disability Assessment Research Clinic (DARC) director for the University of Arizona Arthritis Center, David Wayne Smith, DEd, DABPS, DACFE, has been named one of two recipients of Purdue University's Health and Kinesiology Distinctive Service Award.
The award will be presented on April 17 at the Purdue University Scholarship and Awards Reception in West Lafayette, Ind. The honor recognizes Purdue University faculty, staff and alumni in fields represented by Health and Kinesiology.
Dr. Smith is a specialist in evaluating return to work potential in persons suffering from all debilitating conditions, including musculoskeletal diseases. He obtained his doctoral degree with a major in counseling psychology at Indiana University many years ago. He also completed a two-year post-doctoral training program in rehabilitation, sponsored by the then Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, Washington, DC. An expert on Social Security Disability, he is Board Certified by the American College of Forensic Examiners. He is a past president of the Association of Rheumatology Health Professionals.
Dr. Smith has been with the UA for 50 years, including 32 years in the College of Medicine. He was assistant vice president for UA Health Sciences for six years, working for founding dean, Merlin K. "Monte" DuVal, MD. Dr. Smith has been a member of the staff of the UA Arthritis Center since 1995. He is currently conducting clinics throughout Arizona under contract with the Arizona Department of Economic Security, evaluating return to work potential in severely disabled welfare recipients. He also accepts referrals from any licensed physician, including our own Section of Rheumatology.
DARC has been in operation since 1994. In that time, the clinic has conducted more than 4,000 comprehensive, integrated psycho/social, neuropsychological, medical and vocational assessments directly related to assisting numerous public, private, state and federal programs in their work with individuals with medical, physical, mental, psychological, neuropsychological and psychiatric disabilities.
