University of Arizona Arthritis Center faculty and researchers presented a series of lectures to highlight “Spotlight on Arthritis Week” at world renown Canyon Ranch Health Resort in Tucson, Oct. 9 -12. Featured presenters included UA Division of Rheumatology Chief and Center Director C. Kent Kwoh, MD; Michael Dohm, MD, UA assistant professor of orthopedic surgery; L. Daniel Latt, MD, PhD, and UA associate professor of orthopedic surgery; and Mohab Ibrahim, MD, PhD, UA assistant professor of anesthesiology. Drs. Dohm, Latt and Ibrahim also are center members. ‘Conquering Arthritis... Meet the University of Arizona Arthritis Center Researchers,’ Nov. 8

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates nearly 55 million Americans have some form of arthritis, including almost half of those over age 65. Arthritis affects more women than men and can affect children as young as 6 months old. It is the leading cause of disability in the United States.

Knee pain imageThis free event offers an opportunity for the public to visit with University of Arizona Arthritis Center’s and Division of Rheumatology faculty members, physicians and scientists Thursday, Nov. 8, 6-7:15 p.m., at the UA Thomas W. Keating Building (UA BIO5 Institute), Room 103, 1657 E. Helen St., Tucson.

Look into the future of care, prevention and hopefully  an eventual cure for this debilitating disease. The researcher open house includes poster displays and will be followed by a panel discussion with UA Arthritis Center Director C. Kent Kwoh, MD, orthopaedic surgeon Michael Dohm, MD, and pain management specialist Mohab Ibrahim, PhD, MD.

UAAC’s Dr. Ernest Vina Papers Appear in JAMA Open Network, Lupus Journals

Dr. Ernest VinaUA rheumatologist Ernest Vina, MD, co-authored papers published in JAMA Network Open on “Positive psychological intervention on pain and functional difficulty among adults with osteoarthritis” and Lupus on “Healthcare resource utilization and costs associated with long-term corticosteroid exposure.”

The first, which also includes UA Division of Rheumatology Chief and UA Arthritis Center Director C. Kent Kwoh, MD, as a co-author, appeared in the Sept. 21 issue under “Original Investigations: Complementary and Alternative Medicine.”

The second, published Oct. 27, concludes long-term high-dose oral corticosteroid use is associated with significantly greater future health care resource use and costs. “Judicious reduction in daily steroid dose may decrease the imminent economic burden associated with high-dose steroid use in systemic lupus erythematosus,” state the authors…
