Going back at least a decade, the center has operated as a business unit in the Department of Medicine.

Dr. Dahmer is an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Family and Community Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, and he also serves as the medical director of See Beyond, an integrative medical practice, and founding primary care physician with health benefits provider Sana Benefits. Throughout the course of his career, he has gained significant experience as a practitioner of integrative and family medicine, and more recently has served as chief medical officer at several medical cannabis companies.

Dr. Dahmer earned his medical degree at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He completed his residency in urban family practice at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York, followed by a fellowship in integrative medicine here at the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine.

Dr. Dahmer’s research has focused on integrative medicine, plant-based medicine and the use of cannabis in the management of chronic pain. He has been involved in clinical trials as a principal investigator and consultant and has published numerous papers and book chapters on these topics.

Dr. Abecassis thanked Andrew Weil, MD, AWCIM’s founding director, and Victoria Maizes, MD, its executive director – both professors in the Department of Medicine – for their ongoing leadership of the center while the search was under way.

“Drs. Weil and Maizes will continue to play important roles in the process of onboarding Dr. Dahmer and beyond, especially as we prepare for the grand opening of the new center,” Dr. Abecassis said. The center’s new home, under construction since March 16, 2022, when a groundbreaking ceremony was held at 1231 N. Cherry Ave., is expected to be complete in 2024.

Dr. Abecassis also thanked those who participated in the search and interview process regarding Dr. Dahmer’s hiring.

“Dr. Dahmer’s dedication to and passion for advancing integrative medicine through patient care, education and research are in close alignment with COM-T’s values and mission, and we look forward to his arrival. Please join me in welcoming him to the college,” he added.
