Attendees fluctuated throughout the day at the 2024 Clinical Trials Development Workshop, an annual event hosted by the University of Arizona Cancer Center and the College of Medicine – Tucson’s Division of Hematology & Oncology Chief Rachna Shroff, MD, MS, on Friday, June 21.
Held in the HSIB Forum of the Health Sciences Innovation Building, the workshop ran from 7:30 a.m. until 2 p.m., and drew a variety of faculty, researchers and staffers across the U of A Health Sciences.
Dr. Shroff also is associate dean of clinical and translational research, at the College of Medicine – Tucson, and interim clinical affairs director, at the UArizona Cancer Center.
Following a continental breakfast, Dr. Shroff kicked off the event by welcoming attendees at 8:15 a.m. and introducing Aaron Scott, MD, co-leader of the Cancer Center’s Clinical & Translational Oncology Program and a Hem-Onc division faculty member. Dr. Scott gave an overview entitled Clinical Trials 101 in which he pointed out drug discovery spending on oncology was expected to be $208 billion by 2022 and $300 billion by 2026, according to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. He then walked everyone through different clinical trial phases, offering teasers and tips of things to look out for along the way.
Other speakers and topics included: Rakhi Gibbons, licensing and intellectual property director, Tech Launch Arizona; Simona Janish, assistant director, Human Subjects Protection Program, U of A Office of Research, Innovation & Impact, and Sally Radovick, MD, director, Health Sciences’ Clinical and Translational Science Institute.
Later in the day, Dr. Shroff hosted a clinical trials panel discussion that included Sairam Parthasarathy, MD, chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine, and director of the Center for Sleep, Circadian & Neuroscience Research, as well as Daniel Butler, MD, director, Inflammatory & Aging Skin Research Program, Division of Dermatology, and assistant dean for student affairs, College of Medicine – Tucson.
