Medical students, chief residents, residents and others gather around the DOM’s Dr. Kevin Moynahan, vice dean for education at the College of Medicine – Tucson, at the Internal Medicine Student Meet-and-Greet, Sept. 11, in the COM-T Social Hall.
Department of Medicine faculty, fellows, chief residents, residents and education staff mingled with University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson students at a social mixer organized by the Internal Medicine Residency Program, the largest residency program at the college.
Monica Jimenez, a coordinator for the program, said 44 students and a total of 77 people showed up for the event held in the COM-T Social Hall from 5-7 p.m., Sept. 11. A mini-photo gallery of everyone can be found below.
“This Meet & Greet was the largest event we've had thus far,” said Jimenez. “The Internal Medicine Residency Program was represented well. It was great to see faculty members from several divisions within the Department of Medicine also in attendance. Med students and faculty members were extremely engaged with one another and excited to have 1:1 time with everyone. We’re looking forward to hosting the event again next year.”
The bulk of the audience included COM-T medical students, including third- and fourth-year med students (MS3s & MS4s) doing clerkships and sub-internships this year, as well as students in the Accelerated Pathway to Medical Education (APME) program at the Honors College and other pre-med students.
In addition, it included several Internal Medicine Student Association members, some who attended the IMSA Internal Medicine Specialty Speed Dating event the group hosted with DOM faculty last spring. IMSA’s Nhat Nguyen, an MS2, said he thought the meet-and-greet offered a great way to connect with like-minded students and resident, fellow and attending physicians who had practical advice on navigating their studies, rotations and future careers. Nguyen said he was focused on a practice in general internal medicine or cardiology.
Rosemarie Turk, MD, an IM resident in her second year who has an interest in chronic kidney disease, spent a lot of time chatting with Division of Nephrology Chief Bekir Tanriover, MD, MPH, MBA, and Tirdad Zangeneh, DO, MA, Infectious Disease Transplant Program director and IMRP associate program director.
Other participating faculty included: J.P. Ferreira, MD, another IMRP APD with the Division of Inpatient Medicine; Joshua Malo, MD, another IMRP APD and transplant pulmonologist in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine; Laura Meinke, MD, a critical care pulmonologist, IMRP program director and DOM associate vice chair for education; Kevin Moynahan, MD, college vice dean for education, and Kevin J. Moynahan, MD, both with the Division of General Internal Medicine, Geriatrics & Palliative Medicine; Puneet Shroff, MD, an allergist with the PACCS division and a Societies Mentor; and Amy Sussman, MD, DOM vice chair for education and IM Clerkship director, and program director for the Nephrology Fellowship.
