Three Department of Medicine faculty members have been chosen as new members of the board of directors for the Pima County Medical Society.
- Billie A. Bixby, MD, an assistant professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine and director of the Interventional Pulmonology Program at Banner – University Medical Center Tucson;
- Monica Hinestroza Jordan, MD, assistant professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and associate program director, Infectious Diseases Fellowship; and
- Julia B. Jernberg, MD, associate professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine, Geriatrics & Palliative Medicine, director, DOM Ambulatory Medicine Clerkship, DOM Health & Societies Thread and the Arizona Climate and Health Group started with funds from U of A Research, Innovation & Impact.
“Congratulations to the newly elected Pima County Medical Society Executive Committee and Board of Directors,” said Dennis Carey, PCMS executive director. “We look forward to working with you for the betterment of health care in Pima County and the state.”
Serena Scott, MD, MBA, the DOM vice chair for faculty development and who has championed department faculty taking a more active role in the community, said, “It’s fantastic to have a large representation from the Department of Medicine to serve our local medical community in this way.”
Pulmonary division chief Sairam Parthasarathy, MD, seconded her response, “Hearty congratulations to the new board members! Well deserved.”
“I'm eager to see how we can build collaboration and communities across venues and specialties,” said Dr. Jernberg.
In addition to Drs. Bixby, Hinestroza and Jernberg, continuing on the board from the U of A are: Michael Daines, MD, associate professor and chief, Division of Allergy & Immunology, Department of Pediatrics; Ryan Matika, MD, an associate professor in the Department of Anesthesiology; Karissa Wasiak, MD, MPH, an assistant professor in the Department of Family & Community Medicine; and Melissa Zukowski, MD, MPH, an associate professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine and medical director of the Pediatric ED at Banner – UMC Tucson.
Also, Arthur Sanders, MD, MHA, a professor emeritus in the Department of Emergency Medicine and retired member of the Sarver Heart Center, is secretary-president of the board’s executive committee. Ben Litmanovich, a medical student who works in the Gurtner Lab of Department of Surgery Chair Geoffrey Gurtner, MD, is the U of A student representative on the PCMS Board. And Amreeta Jammu, DO, serves as the resident representative with fellow Family & Community Medicine resident Najayah Niami, MD, as the alternate. An alternate student representative is still being sought.
Ex oficio board members include: TMC’s Robert Aaronson, MD, an associate program director of the U of A Internal Medicine Residency Program – Tucson Campus; Michael M.I. Abecassis, MD, MBA, the Humberto and Czarina Lopez Endowed Dean, College of Medicine – Tucson; and Theresa Cullen, MD, MS, Pima County Health director and an associate professor in the Department of Family & Community Medicine.
